The basic problem is that while reducing the rate of formation of red blood cells does lower the amount of sickle-cell hemoglobin in circulation, it also decreases the total oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Rate of sickling is reduced but so is rate of oxygen delivery to the tissues. This is truly a double-edged sword.
