If you remove a part of a cell and THE REST of the cell (the parts that you did not remove) is still able to sickle, than THE PART YOU REMOVED must not be responsible for sickling. That should make the results of the "ghost" experiment a bit more clear. They looked at just the ghosts. The ghosts did not sickle. Therefore, membrane is not what causes sickling.
