Inspiring children to become excited about the world through science is a personally and professionally rewarding career. Schools around the country have a serious shortage of teachers who have completed any college-level coursework in science. As our society becomes increasingly technical, everyone will need to make decisions based on scientific information.
Teachers who have rigorous, research-based preparation in science are especially qualified to help children understand the health and lifestyle choices they will face in the future. Encouraging young students to study science is also a first step in increasing the number of minorities entering medical and scientific fields.
For science majors who are interested in teaching in K-12 schools, Washington Universitys five-year BA/MAT program offers support for an additional year of coursework leading to dual degrees and Missouri certification. Acceptance into the program is competitive.
