DNA is the blueprint of life! Gain an understanding of the molecular basis of life through this introduction to DNA, genetics, and the human genome. You will learn about your genetic identity, what genes are and how they work, how genes influence health and behavior, how you developed from one cell, how genes gone awry cause cancer, how to make a genetically modified organism, and more. Wet-lab experiences include analyzing your own DNA for an Alu polymorphism, transforming bacteria, cloning a yeast gene, and exploring bioinformatics tools. For non-biology majors; pre-requisites, high school course in biology and in chemistry. This course is an entry point for the Bioinformatics minor for physical science/math/engineering students. 3 hr lecture plus 2 hr lab each week; credit 4 units.
